Here is the testimony of a student pursuing a BTS Insurance course as a career change. She shares the difficulties of returning to studies, finding an apprenticeship, why choose the BTS Insurance?
What grade are you in, and what were you doing before joining the BTS Insurance?
I am in my first year of BTS insurance in apprenticeship. Before joining this BTS, I worked for 2 years in various sales fields (shoe store, clothing, bikes…) and in hospitality.
What high school diploma do you have, and why did you choose insurance?
I have a vocational baccalaureate in commerce, which I also completed through apprenticeship. So now, why insurance? My answer is going to be long! I wanted to resume my studies in a sector that is hiring. In this sector where I feel useful or where I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time.
Useful because everyone has insurance, everyone needs it. It’s a field that is important to me. Helping people, protecting them against certain risks, guiding them during a claim, advising them on investments.
This field also allows for a comfortable standard of living (it must be said that salaries are often higher than in sales). It also lets me change careers during my working life, always within the same branch! The possibilities are vast, which is why I chose insurance.
Which company are you doing your apprenticeship with? (Broker, general agent…)
I am in an apprenticeship at a company that supplies electricity, which is a subsidiary of EDF. It has nothing to do with basic insurance. Without going into details because it’s extremely complicated, the company is its own insurer.
This means it handles all claims it suffers and causes, and indemnifies up to a certain amount (limit).
What would you advise someone wanting to start a BTS Insurance course?
Good question… It’s a personal choice. I became a student in BTS Insurance because it’s a field I really enjoy. I would tell them to hang in there because it’s a domain where you need to know quite a bit of civil law and the insurance code, especially if they want to go far in their studies.
It’s a field that doesn’t seem very “sexy” at first glance; insurance doesn’t necessarily make you want to pursue it, I would say. For my part, insurance is a personal choice.
This is a rapidly developing field that promises a bright future, so why not take the plunge?
Do you think it’s easy to find a company for an internship or apprenticeship?
On this point, I wouldn’t be of much help since I only submitted one CV, because I wanted to join only one company (the one I am currently at). I gave my best during the interview, and I got the position.
I didn’t spend a lot of time searching, so I haven’t experienced refusals. According to my classmates, it’s quite easy.
Did you encounter any difficulties when starting the BTS? Do you have a favorite subject? Which subject has posed the most problems for you?
Only the intensive nature of the courses from the start. My favorite topic is life insurance, and the one that causes me the most difficulty—even if it’s probably the simplest—is auto insurance and MRH (Multi-Risk Home Insurance). My teachers don’t provide enough explanations.
Do you think you will work in insurance for your whole life?
Yes, why not! But on the condition of being in a field of insurance that I like. For example, I couldn’t stay in an auto insurance department my entire life.
What kind of student are you? (Studying a lot, little, with ease…)
I worked for two years, I’m no longer used to classes, and it’s quite difficult for me to spend hours on my review. So, I only revise when I know I have a test. In return, I am very attentive in class.
Are you planning to continue your studies and specialize in a specific field?
I plan to continue, but I don’t yet know what kind of training. I think that at the end of the BTS, I will have a preference for a specialization.
Do you have an ideal career plan?
Not particularly! I would just say that the important thing is to do what you love! We spend most of our time at work, so it’s important!
Professional reconversion can be extremely complicated for some people. I hope this testimony from a BTS Insurance student has been helpful to you.
