Here is the testimonial of a student in BTS Assurance undergoing a career change. She shares with you the difficulties of going back to school, finding an apprenticeship, why choose BTS Assurance?
What grade are you in, and what were you doing before joining BTS Assurance?
I am in my first year of BTS Assurance in work-study. Before enrolling in this BTS, I worked for 2 years in various sales fields (shoe store, clothing, bicycles…) and in hospitality.
What diploma do you have, and why did you choose insurance?
I have a Baccalauréat Professionnel in commerce, which I also did as an apprenticeship. So now, why insurance? My answer will be long! I wanted to resume my studies in a sector that recruits. In this sector where I feel useful or where I don’t feel like I’m wasting my time.
Useful because everyone has insurance, everyone needs it. It’s an industry that’s important to me. Helping people, protecting them against certain risks, guiding them during a claim, advising them on investments.
This industry also allows for a comfortable standard of living (let’s face it, salaries are often as high as in sales). It also enables me to change careers during my working life while staying within this same branch! The possibilities are vast, which is why I chose insurance.
Which company are you doing your work-study in? (Broker, general agent…)
I am in a work-study program at a company that supplies electricity, which is a subsidiary of EDF—nothing to do with basic insurance. Without going into details because it’s very complicated, the company is its own insurer.
That is, it handles all the claims it experiences and makes others suffer, and compensates up to a certain amount (height).
What would you advise someone wanting to start a BTS Assurance?
Good question… It’s a personal choice. I became a student in BTS Assurance because it’s a field I really enjoy. I would tell them to hang in there because it’s a domain where you need to know quite a lot of Civil Code laws and the Insurance Code, especially if they want to go far in their studies.
It’s a field that doesn’t seem very “sexy” at first glance; insurance might not seem very appealing, I’d say. For my part, insurance is a personal choice.
It’s a growing field with promising future prospects, so why not give it a try?
Do you think it’s easy to find a company for an internship or work-study?
On this point, I wouldn’t be much help since I submitted only one CV, because I wanted to join only one company (the one I am currently at). I gave my best during the interview, and I got the position.
I didn’t spend my time searching and therefore didn’t experience rejection. According to my classmates, it’s quite easy.
Did you encounter difficulties when you started BTS? Do you have a favorite subject? Which subject caused you the most problems?
Only at the beginning, the courses are quite intensive. My favorite topic is life insurance, and the one that causes me the most trouble, even though it’s probably the simplest, is car insurance and MRH (Multirisk Home Insurance). My teachers don’t provide enough explanations.
Do you think you will work in insurance for your whole life?
Yes, why not! But only if I am in a domain of insurance that I enjoy. For example, I couldn’t stay in a car insurance department my whole life.
What kind of student are you? (Studying a lot, little, with ease…)
I worked for two years, I’m not used to classes anymore, and it’s quite difficult for me to spend hours on my revision. So, I only review when I know I have a test. In return, I am very attentive in class.
Do you plan to continue your studies and specialize in a field?
I plan to continue, but I don’t yet know what kind of training. I think that at the end of BTS, I will have a preference for a specialization.
Do you have an ideal career plan?
Not really! I would just say that the important thing is to do what you love! You spend most of your time at work, so it’s important!
Career change can be extremely complicated for some people. I hope this testimonial from this BTS Assurance student has been helpful.
