Tale 6: Master’s Student who Went Through the Insurance BTS

Partager

This is the testimonial of a student who went through the BTS Insurance program and is currently in a Master’s in Insurance. After the BTS Insurance he joined a professional license in Insurance

What studies have you completed?

I had a standard parcours until first grade, I chose to do a first STMG option Human Resources (HR). Then, after my Bachelor’s, I completed a BTS Insurance in initial training. Afterwards, I continued with a license as an advisor, manager, insurance underwriter in work-study at IFPASS. Following the completion of my license, I worked for a year and since September 2018, I started a Master’s in work-study in the field of management, project manager specialization over 2 years.

Why did you choose the insurance industry?

When I was in terminal school during the search for higher education, I came across the BTS Insurance, so I added it to my APB (Post-baccalaureate Admission formerly Parcoursup) wishlist because insurance concerns everyone and it’s a field I didn’t know in detail, I wanted to learn more. In the end, I really liked the BTS Insurance.

Did you have trouble finding your internship for your BTS and your work-study for your license?

For the BTS Insurance, I struggled to find a mentor, but I managed to find one thanks to my teacher. However, I have no trouble finding a apprenticeship for my license. I am in the Rhône-Alpes region. My internships and work-study positions were in Lyon or in the suburbs of Lyon.

<h2 Did you do your work-study at the same place as your internships?

No, my internships were at a claims management platform at Matmut. I completed my license work-study at an MMA agency specialized in professionals and businesses. For my master’s, I am in a Crédit Agricole subsidiary specializing in life insurance.

The company changes weren’t too difficult? What advice would you give to someone starting studies in insurance?

Since these changes were my choices, it wasn’t hard.

I would advise them to do a BTS, preferably in work-study within a company, ideally one that allows them to develop the skills they want to improve.

For example, someone wanting to be a sales representative should go directly into B2C (business to customer) at an agency or ideally at a broker, which I find very educational.

For someone preferring back-office management, try to join a platform if possible, otherwise a management position at an agency or ideally at a broker. I started with claims management myself; it helped me understand the usefulness of insurance contracts.

But I don’t necessarily recommend my path. That’s why I want to share my student insurance testimonial to show that there are many pathways.

No matter the internship, firm, agency, or platform, I would advise to invest yourself, be proactive, and not shy away from effort, reflection, or working hours. You need to live your experience and not just endure it.

<h2 Have you faced difficulties in BTS, License, and Master’s? Which subjects caused you the most problems?

In BTS, it was personal insurance; I managed to get a 12 in the BTS, even though for the two years, I averaged around 8 in this subject.

In license, I didn’t enjoy the license because it was too generalist. I feel like I learned nothing. Also, I didn’t work at all, so I can’t really say. Insurance in the world was an interesting subject but not easy. I also had the optional insurance of persons, which wasn’t easy either because my teacher wasn’t great.

What kind of student are you? (Studying a lot, little, with natural ease…)

I am a student with, as teachers might say, “eases,” but overall doing the minimum. After my BTS, I had the support and encouragement of teachers; I studied quite a bit because they held their students, so we adhered to their requirements.

However, in license, we are much freer; I was less interested, I had long commuting times, and I was a student who didn’t revise at all.

In Master’s, having matured, I plan to revise on my own, and the exams will push me to do so as well.

<h2 Do you plan to specialize in a particular field later? Do you want to work in insurance for your entire life?

I don’t know yet what type of company I will go to, but I don’t have an immediate plan to become a project manager; that’s what I’m currently learning in class. In the short term, I’m considering trying to become a strategy consultant after my master’s.

I don’t plan to work in insurance my whole life, but it’s not impossible that I’ll return to it.

Finally, do you have an ideal career plan?

An ideal career plan? Honestly, no. But I would like to not be an employee anymore someday and retire as soon as possible. Between ideal career plans and dreams, I’m not sure.
