This is the testimony of a student about the BTS Insurance apprenticeship program.
What were you doing before the BTS? What grade are you in? What type of institution? (High school, CNED…)
Before joining the BTS Insurance, I was in a language degree. I left this degree because I wanted to find a profession that emphasizes customer relations.
Why did you choose the insurance industry? What interests you?
The aspect that interests me the most in insurance is customer relations.
I chose insurance because it is a field that attracted me greatly, as we are in direct contact with clients at the right moments, but also during their difficult times, especially in the case of claims. It is in these different situations that one must know how to adapt and find the right words to reassure the client.
Are you in an apprenticeship or in initial training? And what type of company are you in? (General agent, broker, mutual)
I was in apprenticeship during my 2 years of BTS Insurance at Maif in Dijon, Burgundy Franche-Comté.
What advice would you give to a student who wants to get into insurance studies?
The advice I would give is to be sure you want to do this, because the careers in this field vary greatly and it is important to be motivated. You need to know how to adapt to situations with clients at an agency and also the transition from practice to theory when in apprenticeship. You must learn to detach yourself from the company when at school.
Did you encounter difficulties when you started? (In class and in the company) Which ones?
I did not encounter any difficulties during the classes; when you listen carefully in class and practice exercises often, things become easier. I did have a bit more trouble in the company, especially at the beginning, as it was new to me. This quickly eased with time to adapt to the new profession.
Do you think you will do insurance your whole life? Why?
I think I will stay in mutual insurance, as the world of mutual societies interests me, but I do not plan to stay in insurance long-term.
Was there a big change between high school and the BTS?
No, there is very little change between the two. The BTS is different from university; in BTS, there is more supervision.
In university, you are more or less thrown into the wild; without good discipline and motivation, it is difficult to get good grades.
The BTS allows for continuity from high school, as it revisits some concepts covered in the Bac (STMG and ES categories).
Do you find the BTS apprenticeship difficult? Which subjects do you find hard? And why do you find them difficult?
For me, the professional culture was a very difficult exercise, but otherwise, with regular work, the other subjects go very well.
What type of student are you? (Not reviewing much with ease, reviewing a lot, reviewing little…)
I am the type of student who reviews a lot and regularly.
Do you have any tips for better learning your lessons?
The two tips I can give are:
- Read your lessons regularly
- Write them down to remember them even better
If you continue your studies, what would you like to specialize in?
I did not continue my studies; I stopped at the BTS insurance level. I am now in the job market.
Do you already have an ideal career plan?
I wish to become an advisor in a mutual insurance company because the spirit of mutual societies suits me more than other insurance companies.
