The motorcycle license tests

The motorcycle license consists of two main stages: the theory exam and practical tests. To qualify for the practical tests, each candidate must first succeed in the theory exam.

The theory of the road code : It is a theoretical exam in which the candidate answers a series of questions about the traffic rules, road safety, and first aid. To pass this stage, a minimum required score must be achieved.

The practical tests : They are divided into two parts – the off-road test (plateau) and the on-road test (route). The off-road test includes several stations where the candidate’s technical and mechanical skills are tested. The on-road test aims to evaluate the candidate’s mastery of riding on the road while respecting safety rules.

Registration and administrative procedures

To take the motorcycle license exam, it is necessary to register at an approved driving school by the state. The institution then handles the candidate’s file and provides a NEPH number (Harmonized Prefectural Registration Number), which is essential for registering for the tests.

Before taking the tests, the candidate must provide the following documents:

– A valid identity document
– Proof of address
– A passport-sized photograph complying with standards
– If applicable, a valid driver’s license (for auto license holders)

Deadlines to respect

After the theory exam : Once the theory exam is passed, the candidate has two years to take and pass the practical tests. After this period, they will need to retake the theoretical exam.

After a failure in the practical tests : In case of failure in one of the practical tests, the candidate must wait a minimum of 2 weeks before being able to retake the exam.

Results and online consultation

Results of the various motorcycle license tests are available online a few days after the exam. To check their result, the candidate must have their NEPH number and visit the official French government site dedicated to exam results.

It is also possible to receive a notification via SMS or email if this option was selected during registration.

In case of success

Congratulations! If the candidate has obtained a positive result in all tests, they are now the holder of a motorcycle license. The issuance of the license is in the form of a Driving License Examination Certificate (CEPC) valid for 4 months. During this period, the holder can ride while waiting to receive their official license by mail.

In case of failure

If the candidate has not scored the required points in one of the tests, they will need to retake the missing test(s). As previously mentioned, a minimum waiting period of 2 weeks must be observed between attempts.

Stay vigilant and persevere

Obtaining a motorcycle license is a demanding journey that requires rigor and perseverance. It is crucial to prepare well and not to become discouraged in case of failure. Keep in mind that road safety is paramount, and the motorcycle license is primarily a responsibility towards yourself and other road users.

Do not hesitate to seek support from your driving school to benefit from personalized guidance and give yourself the best chance of obtaining your motorcycle license.
