Traveling is an exciting experience, but it carries unforeseen risks. That’s why travel insurance is often mandatory. Let’s explore the reasons for this obligation and the benefits it offers.
Travel Insurance: Mandatory or Recommended?
Sometimes mistakenly considered a superfluous expense, purchasing travel insurance often gets overlooked during trip preparations. While generally optional, it proves especially useful for destinations with health risks or where medical care is very expensive, such as the United States.

Without international health coverage, you will have to pay the bill yourself, which can be <strong colossal! Discover other very good reasons to get one before your departure.
Why Is Travel Insurance Necessary?
Financial Protection in Case of Cancellation or Modification
Travel insurance is necessary for several important reasons. It offers financial protection in case of cancellation or modification of the trip. This means you won’t lose money if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel your plans. For example, if you need to cancel your flight due to a sudden illness or a family emergency, travel insurance will reimburse the costs incurred for the ticket and hotel reservations.
Coverage of Medical Expenses Abroad
In case of accident or illness, medical expenses abroad can be very high. Travel insurance covers these medical costs, preventing you from incurring significant expenses. For instance, a simple visit to the emergency room in some countries can cost thousands of euros. The insurance covers medical consultations, hospitalizations, surgical interventions, and even necessary medications during your stay abroad.
Assistance and Repatriation in Serious Situations
Travel insurance also covers repatriation in case of serious situations. If you’re involved in a serious accident or become severely ill abroad, insurance will cover the costs of repatriation to your home country. This includes medical transport, accompaniment by healthcare professionals, and necessary care during transit. Without this coverage, the cost of repatriation can be prohibitive, placing a huge financial burden on you and your loved ones.
Coverage of Search and Rescue Costs
In addition to medical care, travel insurance can cover search and rescue expenses. If you get lost or sustain an accident in an remote area, rescue operations can be costly. Travel insurance ensures these costs are covered, allowing rescue teams to intervene quickly and effectively without financial worries.
Civil Liability Abroad
Liability insurance is another crucial component of travel insurance. It protects you against damages you might cause to third parties during your stay overseas. For example, if you cause an accident that injures someone or damages property, the insurance will cover legal expenses and compensation you may be liable for. This coverage is vital to avoid costly legal proceedings and financial penalties.
Coverage for Baggage and Personal Effects
Travel insurance also covers baggage and personal belongings. In case of loss, theft, or damage to your items, the insurance reimburses replacement or repair costs. This includes clothing, electronics, travel documents, and other valuables you may carry. This protection allows you to travel with peace of mind, knowing your belongings are secured.
Legal Assistance Abroad
Finally, travel insurance can provide legal assistance abroad. If you’re involved in a dispute or accused of an offense in a foreign country, insurance can cover lawyer fees and bail. This help is essential for effectively defending yourself and navigating the often complex and different legal systems from those in your home country.

Countries Where Travel Insurance is Mandatory
To be allowed entry into the territory of certain countries for stays of even short duration (up to 90 days), French nationals must apply for a visa through the embassy or consulate. The authorities of several destinations require an insurance certificate to be included among the required documents or presented during border control.
List of Countries
Travel insurance is thus mandatory for the following countries :
- Algeria
- China
- Cuba
- Qatar
- Russia
- Bhutan
- Belarus
- Iran
Special Cases
Saudi Arabia
Health insurance, which is mandatory, is included in the visa. However, the coverage required by Saudi authorities may be insufficient depending on your needs. It does not cover other hazards associated with traveling abroad: trip cancellation, stay interruption, baggage damage, legal costs, etc. Therefore, to ensure optimal protection, it is recommended to purchase a more comprehensive travel insurance policy.
Mandatory Travel Insurance for Studying Abroad
Going abroad for an internship or studies is an essential step for those wishing to enhance their resume and experience different cultures. Highly recommended for coverage in case of medical issues and other unforeseen events, international student insurance may also be required at the time of registration. This is particularly the case for attending classes at an university or college in the United States or Canada.
Depending on the country and institution, the insurance certificate must meet certain criteria (coverage of medical and repatriation costs, minimum coverage amount, civil liability coverage abroad, etc.) to be accepted.
Europe: Mandatory Travel Insurance for Schengen Visa
Citizens from around a hundred non-European countries (including Maghreb, Africa, Asia, Middle East, Russia, India, etc.) are required to apply for a visa to enter the Schengen Area. Comprising 27 European countries (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland), it is the largest zone in the world where people can travel freely without border controls.
To obtain a Schengen visa, which allows travel within all Schengen states, a specific travel insurance is required. It must cover repatriation costs and emergency medical expenses for a minimum of €30,000.
Mandatory Travel Insurance in Case of Covid
The coronavirus pandemic has also disrupted our local and international travel habits. Many destinations now require visitors to have an insurance certificate explicitly covering medical costs on site, including Covid-related expenses.
Countries Requiring Covid Insurance
Purchasing travel insurance with Covid coverage is mandatory for the following countries:
- Saudi Arabia: Except for Saudi nationals, residents (holders of an iqama), and nationals of Gulf Cooperation Council countries, foreign visitors must have medical insurance covering Covid-19-related costs. The certificate of this coverage, included in the e-visa, is issued together with the Saudi Arabia visa.
- Thailand: Only travelers from countries that require them to present a negative PCR test result upon return (e.g., China) must have travel insurance covering Covid treatments with a minimum coverage of $10,000. Travelers from France are not obliged but are strongly advised to get Thai travel insurance before heading to the Land of Smiles.
- Ukraine: As stated on the website of the Ukrainian embassy in France, applicants must have «insurance covering Covid-19 risks from an insurance company registered in Ukraine or with a local representation» is required.
Insurance for Working Holiday Visa (PVT)
The insurance for PVT (Working Holiday Program) is essential for young adults aged 18 to 30 wishing to temporarily expatriate in a foreign country. PVT combines travel and work, offering a unique experience of cultural immersion and professional discovery. To obtain a PVT visa, several countries, such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, require a specific travel insurance covering medical expenses, hospitalization, repatriation, and civil liability. This insurance protects against unexpected expenses due to accidents or illness, allowing you to enjoy your stay without financial worries. A good PVT insurance also includes coverage for baggage loss, trip cancellation, and legal assistance abroad, providing comprehensive coverage throughout your adventure.
Guarantees and Requirements for PVT Insurance
Insurance policies for the Working Holiday Program (PVT) must meet specific criteria for acceptance by the authorities of participating countries. Key guarantees include coverage of medical and hospitalization costs, often with a required minimum amount, as well as medical repatriation in case of severe accident or illness. Additionally, civil liability is an indispensable component, covering damages you might cause to third parties. Some policies also include guarantees for loss or theft of baggage, trip cancellation, and even legal expenses in case of dispute. Countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and others often require proof of insurance meeting these criteria to issue a PVT visa. Be sure to check each country’s specific requirements to ensure your coverage is sufficient and comprehensive for your stay.
Conclusion
Subscribing to travel insurance is not only mandatory for entering certain countries but also highly recommended to travel with peace of mind. Rules change, so it’s essential to verify the specific requirements of the destination country before departure. Whether for health reasons, visa requirements, or your personal safety, travel insurance offers a valuable and essential protection.
